Kendall Cup Amendments

2010-2011 was the first season of the Kendall Cup series for NZ Techno sailors. We indicated that we hoped to learn from the first season and make improvements where possible. We received some helpful feedback about the running of some of the events, and the difficulty of new sailors being pushed up into the next age division for the spring regattas.

Taking those comments into account and after careful discussion, the Techno Association committee has now made the following changes to the Kendall Cup for 2011-2012:

1. There will be six regattas with one drop, down from seven regattas last season.

This will make travelling less onerous for Techno families, support more weekend Techno racing at local clubs, and allow us to focus on ensuring the Techno races at remaining Kendall Cup regattas are well run.

2. There will be a 30 June cut-off for the Techno age divisions for Kendall Cup regattas.

A sailor’s age division for the full Kendall Cup series will be based on their age as at the following 30 June (previously the following 31 December). So a sailor aged 14 on 30 June 2012 will sail in the Under 15s for the 2011-2012 Kendall Cup series. A sailor aged 16 on 30 June 2012 will sail in the under 17s for the 2011-2012 Kendall Cup Series.

This will avoid the problem of some 13 year olds having to sail in the 7.8 division in the spring Kendall Cup regattas, and will increase the eligible numbers in the under 15 divisions.

Other regattas such as the Nationals will continue to be governed by the (31 December) international age rules.

3. The Kendall Cup regattas for 2011-2012 will be:

• Winter Champs, Murrays Bay, 14-16 October 2011,
• Sir Peter Blake, Torbay, 3-4 December 2011,
• North Island Champs, Tauranga, 21-22 January 2012,
• Junior Sail Auckland, Kohimarama, 11-12 February 2012
• Auckland Champs, Howick, 3-4 March 2012
• Techno Autumn Camp, Tauranga, 21-22 April 2012 (tbc)

We are confident that these changes are for the better and hope that they will meet with broad approval. There are a number of new Techno sailors coming through and we are looking forward to seeing you all on the water in October!

Young sailors off to World Champs

Seven young windsurfers plus coach are heading over to San Francisco this week for the 2011 Techno 293 World Championships.

Based at the St Francis Yacht Club, directly in front of the Golden Gate bridge, the event runs from 17 to 24 July. The kiwi sailors, four boys and three girls, are all in their mid-teens, and come from sailing clubs in Whangaparaoa, Auckland, Tauranga and Christchurch. Their coach, Kate Ellingham from Devonport, is a former NZ number one in the Olympic RS:X class.

“We’re thrilled to have been able to put together such a good team for this big event” said Techno Association development officer Stuart Pedersen. “This is a really cool sailing class for kiwi kids to get into, and there’s a fun and exciting pathway from zero to hero of which this event is just part. We’re working to make the sport grow nationwide and so we’re looking for kids around intermediate school age, whether they can sail or windsurf or neither, to put their hands up and ask to be involved. Subsidised gear and instruction will be available this spring and summer.”

Sailing in the under 17 boys division will be Hamish Dunning-Beck, Luke Holliday and Alex Hart, plus Steph Corkery, Xanthe Bowater and Charlotte De l’Isle will race in under 17 girls. Racing in the open division will be Tony Mackenzie. Some of the sailors are also attending other US regattas on this trip.
More than 40 countries have adopted the Techno 293 One Design as their chosen tool for bringing on young riders. The Techno board is now the biggest fleet in world windsurfing and the most dynamic class in windsurfing and in sailing.

The first Techno 293 World Championships in Marsala, Italy in 2006, attracted 109 competitors and over the following four years, as the World Championships were hosted by 4 more European nations, numbers increased to 364 competitors from 26 countries in 2010. This year the event is moving outside Europe and while many European sailors will not make the trip, entries exceed 200 sailors from more than 30 countries.

Techno Camp and Kendall Cup Prizegiving

Thanks to everyone who participated in last weekend’s Techno Camp at Manly. We had 14 Techno sailors for the two days, most of whom slept over at the club on Saturday night. The support from parents, sailors and coaches was amazing (not to mention the food!)

We had some excellent training on Saturday with good wind conditions, with Kate Ellingham, Grant Beck, Ben Mackay and Tony McKenzie catering to all the different levels of sailing ability. On Sunday some brave sailors took their shortboards out into a good 30 – 35knots and entertained us all!! Kate then did some rig and tactics coaching with the sailors.

On Saturday night we had a great Kendall Cup prizegiving, with guest speaker Tony Kendall entertaining and motivating us all with amazing stories about his and his children’s life of sailing.
The prizes from W.S.P. blew us all away with their generosity and the trophies from Barbara will be treasured by all who deservedly won them. Our thanks to W.S.P, Tony and Barbara Kendall and a big thanks to Stuart Pedersen for this great series.

We hope to keep these camps a regular feature of our sailing calendar and we will be looking to have another early next summer.

Hope to see you all on the water soon,
